Alumni Profile: Rep. Dave Reed, '02

May 14, 2015

State Representative Dave Reed, who was elected Majority Leader in November 2014, returns to Fels on Sunday, May 17, as the Fels graduation speaker.  Representative Reed, a scholar-athlete from Indiana County, was graduated from the Fels Institute in 2001, where he began his first campaign for the legislature with encouragement from his classmates and faculty.  He was elected in 2002 and has served continuously since then.

In November 2010, he was elected to chair the House Majority Policy Committee, where he led to passage a competitive business tax package designed to stimulate economic growth and employment in the private sector.  He also supported commonsense policies which helped grow the Marcellus Shale gas industry while protecting the Commonwealth’s natural heritage for future generations.  Alongside partners from the nonprofit sector, faith based organizations, and community groups, he also led the Empowering Opportunities: Gateways Out of Poverty policy initiative, designed to study the barriers facing low-income residents as they work to become self-sufficient.

He chaired the House Republican Campaign Committee in three consecutive cycles, growing the majority each election. The latest election resulted in the largest majority Republicans have held in the House, 119 members, since the 1957-1958 legislative session.
