Senior Fellow; Executive Director, Philadelphia Parks Alliance

George Matysik serves as Executive Director of the Philadelphia Parks Alliance, the leading advocacy, public policy, and community engagement non-profit for public spaces in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Since joining the Parks Alliance in September 2015, George led the successful advocacy efforts for largest investment in public space in the city’s history—the $500 million Rebuild Philadelphia initiative— and has fostered a dramatic increase in community engagement at the city’s 150+ recreation centers through the Parks Alliance’s Recreation Community Initiative. Over the past year, George has grown the Parks Alliance from a traditionally one-person shop to a diverse team of more than 20 staff, interns, skilled volunteers, and AmeriCorps VISTAs, while rapidly growing direct service efforts.

A lifelong Philadelphian, George is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his degree in Urban Studies in the evening, while working his way through school as a janitor there. George most recently served as Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Philabundance, where he led the development of Fare & Square, the nation’s first non-profit grocery store. George also recently served as President of country’s preeminent senior hunger relief organization—the National CSFP Association—and was founding Executive Director of Feeding Pennsylvania, a collaborative non-profit of the Commonwealth’s food banks. In his free time George is an avid traveler, reader, and parks and recreation user. He lives in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia with his wife, Alix, and his diabolical miniature pinscher, Duke.
