Organization:

FairVote

City:

Takoma Park

State:

Maryland

Organization Overview:

FairVote is a nonpartisan champion of electoral reforms that give voters greater choice, a stronger voice, and a representative democracy that works for all Americans.

What We Do: FairVote has a proven record since 1992 as a nonpartisan trailblazer that advances and wins electoral reforms at the local, state, and national level through strategic research, communications, and collaboration. Today, we are the driving force behind advancing ranked choice voting and fair representation in multi-winner legislative districts that will open up our elections to better choices, fairer representation, and more civil campaigns.

Project Name:

Four-Year Strategy Measurement, Evaluation, and Learning
Project Type:
Strategic Plan; Program Evaluation

Project Overview:

FairVote recently completed a four-year strategic planning process to guide our work for 2021-2024. By the end of October 2020, we will have finalized one-year and two-year milestones to help the organization measure its progress in 2021 and beyond.

A Fels MPA student would work with FairVote’s Executive VP for Strategic Partnerships and Operations to develop a framework for FairVote to advance our measurement, evaluation, and learning (MEL) agenda. This MEL work would entail research into organizations with a strong MEL framework and making recommendations for how FairVote can advance its own MEL agenda to enable learning and continuous improvement. Apart from building organizational muscle memory for MEL, this would position FairVote to receive increased support from major institutional funders.

Deliverable(s):

The student would review FairVote’s four-year strategic plan and milestones, and work with FairVote staff to develop a dashboard with key performance indicators (KPIs) or other tools that can be used for organization-wide measurement, evaluation, and learning (MEL). They would provide written recommendations for how the MEL framework and agenda should be launched and set up for success at FairVote, including recommendations for infrastructure, systems, and processes to support these goals.

Project Timeline: The timeline is flexible based on the student’s availability. We would ideally have the MEL framework developed by May 2021.
