Inclusive Public Leadership: How to Run for Office

Tuesday, October 10, 2017 - 5:30pm to 7:00pm
Event Information:

Fels is pleased to welcome Fels Alumnus Wayne Smith, former House Majority Leader in the Delaware House of Representatives, to talk about running for office. Elected as a Republican representative from Delaware’s seventh district, Wayne served as majority leader for the last ten years of his 16-year career in the state legislature.  Significant responsibilities included wrapping up the budget at the end of each legislative session and rewriting the House of Representatives district boundaries following the 2000 Census.  Since 2007, Wayne has served as President and CEO of the Delaware Healthcare Association, the trade association for Delaware hospitals and health facilities.  Wayne is a Fels alumnus and has taught courses in the program including Campaigns: How to Run and Win.

Wayne is the eighth speaker in our non-partisan civic skills workshop series focused on developing tools for inclusive public leadership.

This workshop will address the following questions, drawing on lessons learned from a successful career politician:

  • As a politician, how do you win an election?
  • What do prospective candidates need to do to prepare for an election – from working with the party, to developing ties with the community and donors, to better understanding the issues and the political system?
  • How can a candidate cope with the personal pressures of campaigning - from personal attacks to campaign demands on family members?

The workshop is open to Penn students, with priority given to Fels students.
