The Fels Institute of Government is proud to host Ryan Callanan and Leah Meadows for a discussion on their careers in international development.

About the Speakers: 

Ryan Callanan began his career working on a presidential political campaign in 2007 and 2008. As a Field Organizer in Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio, he organized volunteers for phone banks and canvassing, conducted political outreach to local elected leaders, and executed political rallies for the candidate and other surrogates. Mr. Callanan began working as a federal contractor in 2008. He has worked for contractors such as Bearing Point, Deloitte, Visionary Integration Professionals, and Booz Allen Hamilton.

In 2009, Mr. Callanan supported clients at the Military Leadership Diversity Commission as Budget Director, Congressional Liaison, and Senior Administrator. He coordinated a full review of the ground combat exclusion policies for women in the military, leading to a formal repeal of the policies by the Secretary of Defense. In 2012, Mr. Callanan supported clients at the Department of State, Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism. As Project Planning Manager, he led the planning and execution of the semiannual Implementation and Assessment Group meetings where 85 partner countries discussed issues relating to nuclear detection, nuclear forensics, and disaster response and mitigation. Mr. Callanan currently works as a Country Manager for the DTRA's Cooperative Biological Engagement Program. He is responsible for the implementation of of CBEP's efforts in the areas of biosafety, biosecurity, and biosurvailance. 

Leah Meadows is the Senior Manager of Corporate Partnerships and Philanthropy of PSI (Population Services International), a non-profit global health organization based in Washington, D.C. PSI operates in more than 50 countries worldwide to shape consumer and market behaviors and contribute to more effective health market systems. Leah is passionate about social innovation and bringing diverse perspectives to tackle global challenges. At PSI, Leah leads the innovation hub and has created a $28 million global portfolio of pilot projects that test solutions to improve women and girls’ health.

 Prior to joining PSI, Leah managed adolescent girl programming and research at the United Nations Foundation and created gender policy memos for Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government related to health, leadership, economic empowerment, political participation, and education. Leah started her career by managing an international supply chain for a jewelry company in Singapore. Leah is trained in corporate social responsibility, philanthropic partnerships, and shared value strategies. She holds a Masters in Development Economics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a Bachelors in Gender Studies and Anthropology from the University of Virginia.
