Poplar Park Project

Organization:
Down The Line and Beyond Foundation
City:
Philadelphia
State:
Pennsylvania
Organization Overview:

Down The Line’s mission is to facilitate positive character and education development for Philadelphia area youth through the sport of tennis, in order to maximize each child’s full potential on and off the court and promote a community around the sport. Down The Line currently serves over 2000 young children in the Philadelphia area, and has rebuilt four public courts.

Through our Junior Ambassador Program, committed, young tennis players, from diverse backgrounds are served up healthy habits and taught good character. Moreover, in our Outreach Program we use tennis as a means to provide children in under-resourced communities character-building and educational opportunities in a positive, fun, healthy environment. 100% of our junior ambassadors have gone on to play college tennis. Down The Line and Beyond holds tennis programs in basements, classrooms, gyms, and even on concrete parking lots. This has been made possible by the portable courts obtained with the help of Sport Court, which can be placed and played on anywhere.

Project Name:
Poplar Park Project
Project Type:
Strategic Plan; Program Development
Project Overview:

Lower income Philadelphia youth often do not have access to quality sports and education in their neighborhoods. The most difficult challenge is bringing these programs to the within walking distance as many youth rely on public transportation. One of the biggest obstacles is a lack of quality, year round public parks in lower income districts. Working with the parks and recreation department and local organizations, create a feasible plan to allow Down the Line to provide children in these areas with affordable after school education and sports at Poplar Park, where Down The Line is set to build three new tennis courts.

The plan will need to have two different sections for programming, one for winter and one for summer seasons. The student should take into account staffing needs and space sharing between the city and Down the Line. The plan should also include a year round fundraising strategy that will sustain program expenses at Poplar park.
