Playworks Evaluation

Organization:
Playworks
City:
Philadelphia
State:
Pennsylvania
Organization Overview:

Playworks is an elementary school program designed to improve recess for kids and teachers. Playworks creates inclusive environments for play and physical activity both within and beyond the school day to build empathy, increase learning and improve student behavior. The Playworks Coach model provides a full-time year-round coach to work in each school. Playworks partners with elementary schools in Philadelphia by providing an on-site coordinator to teach, model, and empower a sustainable recess program. Through the Playworks model, recess becomes a more active and inclusive experience for all kids.

Project Name:
Playworks Evaluation
Project Type:
Program Evaluation
Project Overview:

This evaluation will explore implementation and impact of the Playworks program on student behavior and school climate in 26 School District of Philadelphia schools.

Data will be collected through two surveys, (1) a School Staff Annual Survey and (2) a School Engagement Survey. The School Staff Annual Survey is an online survey completed once a year by school staff to share feedback on the program quality. The School Engagement Survey is completed twice a year and serves as the performance measure to monitor program implementation and student progress over the course of the year. Ten teachers from each school will complete the survey about a random sample of their class in the Fall and then again in the Spring.

The results from this analysis will be used to report back to PennServe and the Corporation for National Community funders and potential schools about the level of program quality. It will also inform the School District of Philadelphia in its efforts to understand how to create meaningful learning environments for students.

Deliverable(s)

The final deliverable for this project is a report that describes the research findings related to program implementation and impact on student behavior and school climate, and includes recommendations for program improvement and future research.
