A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Clark grew up in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Upon completion of his college education at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Mr. Clark started his corporate career as a market analyst with Grey Advertising in New York City, followed by a role as a product manager at Swift and Co. in Chicago. At Swift, Clark supervised brands such as Soup Starter, Pauly cheeses and Brown ‘n Serve breakfast meats.
From 1982 to 1995, Mr. Clark founded W.J. Clark and Co., a food manufacturing firm that produced and marketed specialty foods. Products included Bean Cuisine soups and pastas, Summer Garden salad dressings, Woodland Pantry wild rice and wild mushrooms, as well as Running Rabbit natural licorice.
Following the successful sale of his food company, Clark returned to the Delaware Valley as a consultant and later as a senior executive at the W. Atlee Burpee seed company. In 2001, he became the Executive Director of Philabundance, the region’s largest hunger relief organization.
Early in his tenure, Clark oversaw the merger and integration of the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank and Philabundance, resulting in a stronger organization providing more food and a wider range of services to the Delaware Valley. The recession in 2007 created a huge increase in the need for food assistance, and in response, Philabundance created multiple programs to increase the supply and type of food available to those in need. The organization grew from 30 employees, distributing 8 million pounds of food each year to nearly 200 employees distributing more than 35 million pounds of food annually.
Clark expanded marketing efforts which led to Philabundance’ s increased awareness and visibility among the public in the Philadelphia region, along with record levels of donated revenue. Philabundance expanded and created new initiatives under Clark’s leadership including a food service job training program for low income individuals, an area-wide 800 number for services called the Hunger Help Line and Fresh for All, traveling farmer-market style venues that provided free produce to a dozen locations in two states for thousands of families on a weekly basis. At Philabundance, Clark saw one of his dreams through completion in September of 2013 with the opening of the nation’s first nonprofit supermarket, Fare & Square, serving the community of Chester, PA.
In 2014 Clark left Philabundance and became a senior fellow at the Wharton Social Impact Initiative and to explore the development of a new organization. Clark and with his wife Cindy founded Child’s World America in 2015. Child’s World America is a catalyst for improving the well-being of children in our society. The organization promotes the appreciation of children’s perspectives and fosters a better understanding of childhood experience, while supporting the interaction and community among professionals, individuals and organizations committed to improving the well-being of the nation’s children.
Mr. Clark serves on numerous boards and committees including the Pennsylvania Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, the Quaker School in Horsham, the Delaware Valley Nonprofit Partnership and the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation.
