Project Name:
Firearms Trafficking Analysis
Project Type:
Data Analysis
Policy Analysis
Project Overview:

In 2021, there were a total of 10,310 firearms recovered and traced in the state of New York. Outside of New York, Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina were the primary source states of those firearms. Why is it that Georgia has been New York's number one source state of firearm purchases that are recovered in violent crimes within New York? This project is intended to identify different factors regarding the source states which may include a market analysis of firearm purchases/sales within the source states, brief policy explanation on state gun laws as it relates to background checks, purchases, quantity, and licenses, as well as any identifiable migration/travel patterns to explain the connections between the source states and New York. This analysis will be used to enhance ATF's Crime Gun Intelligence model on identifying those factors and its influence on firearm trafficking patterns and indicators.
