MLK Day of Service: A note from the Fels Student Association

Sat, 2011-01-08 09:52

We are looking forward to the beginning of the Spring semester! This year, Martin Luther King Day is Monday, January 17th. In recent years, Martin Luther King Day has become known as Martin Luther King Day of Service, and is a "Day On, Not Off." Citizens around the country engage in service projects and events dedicated to connecting with their communities.

We are happy to let the Fels community know about two wonderful opportunities for MLK Day of Service.

1. Bartram’s Garden Clean Up

Last year, the Fels community helped UC Green clean and de-weed Bartram's Gardens, an historic estate with gardens in West Philadelphia that serves as a 'community cultural center' for the city. UC Green is a non-profit organization that works to increase the number of trees and revitalize green space in the University City/West Philadelphia area. The project is from 9 AM - Noon on Monday, January 17th, and the location is: Bartram's Garden 54th St. and Lindbergh Blvd. Philadelphia, PA 19143 All gloves and tools will be provided. For more information about UC Green and Bartram's Gardens: http://www.ucgreen.org/ and http://www.bartramsgarden.org/

2. Young Scholars Charter School Neighborhood Clean up

Fels community members are invited to join, courtesy of Zach Blattner '10, to join Young Leaders, which has selected a neighborhood clean up as part of MLK Day of Service. Young Scholars will join Greater Philadelphia Cares and members of the community for a: Neighborhood Clean-Up 2300 W. Thompson Street Philadelphia, PA 19121 10am-2pm Meet at the site (very close to Girard College) between 9:45-10am.

Please RSVP at the fels website https://www.fels.upenn.edu/webform/rsvp-mlk-service-event and sign up for one of the projects by Wednesday, January 12th. More details about the projects and transportation will follow. We are very excited to organize this as a Fels Student Association Social Committee event; we hope that 1st Years, 2nd Years, executive, certificate students, alums, and staff, will be able to come together to work in the community.
