From Iraq to Fels - One Student's Journey

July 26, 2010

The story of Fels student Safa Ismael, and his arduous, compelling journey from war-torn Iraq to his adopted city of Philadelphia, was featured in the June 15 edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer as well as the WHYY-FM program "Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane."

Ismael's path to Fels includes work as an interpreter at the US military base at Mosul; repeated threats against his life because of his job; and the intervention of a Pennsylvania state representative to have his be the first case of asylum granted for a former Iraqi translator.  Ismael is enrolled in the certificate in politics program at Fels and currently works at Penn in the Linguistic Data Consortium.
