Fels Faculty Director Dr. John MacDonald to Deliver Prestigious Lee Lecture at 2016 Stockholm Criminology Symposium

Dr. John MacDonald, Fels Faculty Director and Chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Criminology, has been selected to deliver the highly-prestigious Jerry Lee Lecture at The Stockholm Criminology Symposium 2016.

Dr. MacDonald’s lecture will focus on the role science can play in designing safer and healthier cities. His remarks will key on emerging evidence from randomized controlled trials and natural experiments demonstrating the effects of well-designed changes to place, for example, from small neighborhood gardens to public building projects, on improving health and safety of urban large populations.

John MacDonald is Professor of Criminology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on crime policy, including applications of quasi-experimental methods to evaluating programs and policies. In 2012, Dr. MacDonald won the Association of Public Policy and Management's David N. Kershaw Award, established to honor individuals younger than 40 who have made significant contributions to the field of public-policy analysis and management.

He has served as a principal investigator and co-principal investigator on health, injury prevention, and crime research projects through funding provided by the American Statistical Association, the National Institute of Justice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. His recent work appears in American Journal of Epidemiology, American Journal of Public Health, Economic Journal, Criminology, and Journal of Legal Studies.

As the Fox Faculty Director, Dr. MacDonald also chairs the Fels Faculty Steering Committee and focuses on organizing standing University faculty to teach core courses at Fels.

The Jerry Lee Lecture is named in honor of Jerry Lee, the initial donor of The Stockholm Prize in Criminology. Jerry Lee has committed his life to improving the global community through the promotion of social science research into the causes of such social problems as poverty and crime. His dedication to reducing human misery and injustice has resulted in important achievements in Criminology, and Social Science education in general.

The Jerry Lee lecture will take place on June 16 in the Auditorium at City Conference Centre in Stockholm, Sweden.
