Dr. James Spady Returns to Fels for a Lecture and Reunion
On Monday, June 4, 2012, former Fels Director Dr. James Spady returned to reflect and reconnect with the Fels community. Over 120 alumni gathered to listen to Dr. Spady's spirited lecture on the evolution of professional public leadership education in American universities and to celebrate his 15 years of leadership and service to Fels.
Fels is pleased to announce two exciting initiatives in conjunction with Dr. Spady’s visit.
- The current Fels Seminar Room will be renamed the “Dr. James A. Spady Seminar Room.”
- Also, in light of surpassing our goal to raise $25,000 in Dr. Spady's honor, we've decided to go for $50,000. To date, we have raised $42,000!

Dr. Spady was kind enough to provide Fels with the complete collection of newsletters from his tenure as Director of Fels. He also curated an abbreviated collection.
Fels Alumnus and Professor: Dr. Robert M.W. Kempner
Born in 1899 and raised in Freiburg, Germany, Dr. Robert M. W. Kempner rose to prominence as a lawyer. By the 1920’s he held the position of government counselor and legal advisor to the Prussian Police force. However, he was one of the earliest to speak out against the Nazi party through a “historic report [that] told of its evils” and it was this open opposition that led to his arrest and imprisonment. Due to his Jewish heritage Kempner’s citizenship was revoked and in 1933 he was expelled from Germany.
