Interning in the field of public policy is an exciting opportunity to experience first hand how your government functions and the roles individuals play in the day-to-day work of governing. Whether you are interested in a specific policy issue or you want to work in a particular institution, there is an internship to suit you. Our database includes internships in Congress, political campaigns, federal agencies, international organizations, and non-profit groups. How it works: Students interested in participating in the program must first submit the application. The deadline for applications for summer 2008 is February 1, 2008, although we recommend you complete the process as soon as possible after August 15, 2007, as many of the best internships have early November deadlines. Students participating in Semester in Washington are also welcome to use our resources to find an internship. We suggest you apply to our program (and your potential internship sponsors) two months prior to the start of your internship. After reviewing your application, we will email you a list of appropriate organizations that accept interns. Where possible, staff will use contacts to facilitate the process. Students are welcome to schedule a meeting with the program director, Deirdre Martinez, if questions remain after receiving the list of possible internships. The length of the internship will vary by sponsor, though the range is between six and ten weeks during the summer. Semester students are expected to work the duration of the term. During the summer, students are expected to work thirty to forty hours per week at their internship, Monday through Friday, and are strongly encouraged to participate in speaking and mentoring events and tours. Semester interns more typically are expected to work part time.
