Funding Sources for Public Policy Internships in Washington D.C. The Washington Scholarship The Washington Scholarship is administered by the Fels Public Policy Internship Program and is open to all program participants who have been offered and accepted a summer internship in Washington, D.C. The scholarship provides partial funding for housing and other living expenses for a summer in Washington, D.C. (approximately $1,500) All program participants will be emailed an application for the scholarship in late May. Award amounts will vary and will be offered based on financial need, grade point average, year in college (juniors are given priority), and other factors. Civic House Civic House administers a scholarship to support students who have public interest internships. Details online at: http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/civichouse/internship_fund.html DC Penn Club DC Penn Club, the largest alumni club in Washington, sponsors one or more students per summer as funding permits through their scholarship program. For details and application, go to: http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/special-polices/policies-summer-waiver.htm Work Study If you currently participate in the federal work study program, you may be able to be paid for your summer internship. In the work study program, you may work both on and off campus. If you work off campus, your employer will be a private nonprofit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest. Off campus employers enter into an agreement with the University of Pennsylvania to pay part of your income.From the Student Employment Handbook: (http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/seo/forms/StudentEmploymentHandbook.pdf) Summer Federal Work-Study Program Depending upon federal funding, summer work-study is available to current undergraduate and graduate students. A student, who was eligible for work-study during the academic year, is NOT automatically eligible for summer work-study. A student must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the coming year. An application for the Summer Federal Work-Study Program is usually available on our website after spring break.
