The Performance Imperative

Course Number: GAFL 735

The course will explore the critical role of performance measurement in improving management, particularly for public sector entities. This will include the examination of fundamental principles of performance measurement, the identification and application of different performance measurement techniques and strategies, and the evaluation of best practices within the field.  Topics to be covered will include the evolution and adaptation of "Stat-ing" (e.g., CompStat, CitiStat, StateStat), the relationship between performance measurement and financial management, and how performance measurement can be used to inform different analytic techniques.

As the founding directors of CitiStat and StateStat, respectively, Matt and Beth are self-described practitioner of performance measurement that have developed, implemented, and adapted performance measurements systems that revolutionized the management of local and state governments and been replicated around the world.

On-campus meetings for Spring 2017 will be on Fridays from 9:30am-1pm on Jan. 13, Feb 17, Mar 17, and Apr 21 and on Saturdays from 2-5:30pm on Jan 14, Feb 18, Mar 18, and Apr 22 The class will meet online weekly on Mondays.
