Pennsylvania Leadership Academy
Purpose & Approach:The Pennsylvania Leadership Academy (PALA) was established in 2004 as a joint venture between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania. The Academy was formed in order to strengthen the capacity of legislators in finding effective solutions to relevant Pennsylvania issues. PALA consists of approximately twenty Fellows, including legislators from both houses of the Pennsylvania Assembly and staff from the Governor’s Office. Fellows represent both political parties and come from all areas of the Commonwealth.
The Academy is housed at the Fels Institute of Government and is staffed by a Fels project manager and graduate students in the Government Administration program. PALA staff assists legislators by providing customized research on topics requested by the Fellows. In addition, the staff periodically produces its own reports on relevant issues for Pennsylvania.
Results & Publications:
The most recent PALA Conference was held in January 2007 at the University of Pennsylvania. This conference engaged 18 Pennsylvania legislators and government officials and included presentations on emergency preparedness, regional economic development, and the potential privatization of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority.
